Clay Cross A61 Bus Priority

Clay Cross A61 Bus Priority Project

Derbyshire County Council is undertaking a project in Clay Cross to improve the timing of late running buses and help with traffic issues on the A61 as part of the Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP).

Alongside this, the Clay Cross Town Deal led by North East Derbyshire District Council (NEDDC) is working to improve journeys for pedestrians and vehicle users within the Town Centre. Derbyshire County Council’s BSIP team and the NEDDC Town Deal team are working together to ensure minimal disruption and best value for money.

The BSIP project has five different parts. The first part of the project is complete, which involved installing traffic signals at the A61 High Street / Harris Way Roundabout and added pedestrian crossings across the A61.  This work balances the traffic flows and will take account of traffic movements that will start to take place following the changes to road usage under the Town Scheme.

Traffic signals on A61 High Street and Holmgate Road Junction

Traffic signals will be installed at the A61 High Street and Holmgate Road junction giving priority for late running buses, and a phase for helping traffic on the A61 with the right turn manoeuvre.  These signals will be coordinated with the signals at Harris way roundabout to control overall traffic flows.

The existing pedestrian crossing north of Holmgate Road will be included in the system, as well as new, controlled pedestrian crossings across all four roads at the junction.

Refurbishment of A61 High Street / Thanet Street / Clay Lane traffic signals

Here, the existing traffic signals will be refurbished so that they are able to push through late running buses. The refurbishment will include the redefined layout of the right turn facilities. A new network system to help traffic movement through sets of traffic lights will be introduced, too.

Further rollout of new traffic signals system

A system to coordinate and control traffic movements through all the signals will be implemented that can assist with traffic flows in Clay Cross and provide coordinated control of the A61.

Improvements and refurbishment to Clay Cross Bus Station.

Clay Cross bus station will be refurbished. The current five bus stands will be reduced to four to allow for a new right turn at the exit. New shelters will be installed, and resurfacing work will also take place. Additionally, new information boards will be added to improve information available to passengers.

This work will be done in collaboration with Town Deal Programme, which will be carrying out work to reopen Bridge Street and close part of Market Street leading up to the A61.
